Alter an Altoid ® MINT TIN into a cute Mini Purse to hold Photographs, makeup, gift cards and other small items!

Image

you will need: Corner punch (not shown), Colored Cardstock with stamps and inks (or Designer Paper of choice), Sharp Paper Snips, 1/4" Ribbon for edge AND purse HANDLES, 1/2" Ribbon for edge, 1/4" SU STICKY STRIP (a must!), and an empty Altoid ® MINT TIN - cleaned out, dust free.

Image

first cut your card stock (or DSP) into two pieces-  2&5/16"x 3&11/16" and two  pieces- 2&1/8" x3&1/2".  The bigger pieces are for the outside lid and back. The smaller pieces are for the inside of the tin.

Corner round the 4 pieces. You can also use paper snips if you don't have the punch.  then decorate as desired.

Image

place the tin on the table with the hinge towards you. The HINGE is the bottom of the purse.

 Image

apply Sticky Strip as close to the endge of the lid. If you go off the edge... just fold it back over.

Image

adhere the cardstock to the lid. Repeat for the back of the tin. Here's a view with the tin opened to show lid and back.

Image

take a strip of sticky strip and apply to the upper "lip" of the tin. It fits just right. then adhere your 1/4" ribbon to that sticky strip. Snip off the ribbon at the "seam".

Image

apply Sticky strip to the bottom egde of the bottom portion of the tin as shown.  Peel off the red backing.

Image

apply a second sticky strip right above the last so it butts right up to the lid edge. (as shown). peel off the red backing.

Image

Adhere the 1/2" Ribbon to the area. make sur eyou don't cover the little notches... you need these exposed to keep the tin closed securely.

 Image

adhere the other smaller pieces of decorated card stock to the inner surfaces of the tin.

Image

Now with the tin closed and the front facing up (hinges towards you), apply two strips of sticky strip as shown.  (approx1/2" from each end).  Peel off the left sticky strip backing. leave the right one in tact.

Image

Ribbon length you need for the handle is about 16". Lay one end over the left sticky strip... hang about 2-3" ove the edge as shown. This will wrap around the tin to the other side.

Image

Peel the right sticky strip backing and take the longer end of the ribbon and from a handle and then stick to the strip. (as shown).

Image

flip the tin over. again the hinge towards you.  Apply sticky strip like you did on the front.  Peel off the red backing on the LEFT side.

Image

Taking the long piece of ribbon again... adhere it to the left sticky strip. Peel the right sticky strip now.

Image

take the "hung over" piece of ribbon from the other side and stick it halfway up the strip (as shown). The ribbon should hold tight against the hinged area.

Image

form the remaining ribbon into  a handle and meet the other end. Cut off any extra ribbon so it matches end to end.

All finished!

(Ideas like this have been floating around for a while. I have modified this project to fit a small mint tin. you can basically change measurements to fit any size hinged tin! there are mini mint tins and much bigger tins such as nugget tins! )

Great tutorial, I am going to have to give this a try. I have been saving those tins and haven't been sure what to do with them until now.

How sweet! I am going have to run out and get some of these tins and try this. Thanks!
